# Product kits

> 📍 **Where can I find this module?**
> *Main menu > Catalog > Products*

A **kit** (or bundle) is a product made up of several sub-products. It allows you to sell a set of items under a single reference, while keeping traceability for each component.

> **Example:** A "Workstation" kit can include a monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse, sold together at a single price.

---

## 1. Create a kit

1. Create or open a product in *Main menu > Catalog > Products*.
2. In the **Sub-products** (Product Bundles) tab, add the products that make up the kit by clicking **"Select a product"**.
3. For each component, specify the **quantity** included in the kit.

As soon as a product has at least one sub-product, it is considered a kit.

---

## 2. How the kit price is calculated

The **Kit pricing** block appears on the record of a kit product. It contains the **Kit price calculation mode** field, which determines how the sale price is obtained:

| Mode | Behavior |
| --- | --- |
| **Manual entry** | The sale price **and** purchase price are **entered manually** on the kit. Kafinea **does not recalculate them** when components change. |
| **Calculated from components** | The kit’s sale price **and** purchase price are **calculated automatically** as the sum of the components’ values, weighted by their quantities. |

---

## 3. Display and behavior on the kit record

### 3.1 Context banner in the *Pricing information* block

An information banner appears at the top of the pricing block:

- In *Manual entry* mode: "Manual entry: neither the sale price nor the purchase price is automatically recalculated from the components."
- In *Calculated from components* mode: "The sale price and purchase price of this kit are calculated automatically from its components."

### 3.2 Read-only *Unit price* and *Purchase price* fields + "Calculated (kit)" badge

In *Calculated from components* mode, the **Unit price** and **Purchase price** fields are displayed as **read-only** and accompanied by a **"Calculated (kit)"** badge. A tooltip specifies: *"This value is calculated automatically from the kit’s components. Switch to Manual entry mode (no recalculation) to enter it."*

The kit’s purchase price directly feeds the margin calculation on quotes, orders, and invoices containing this kit.

In *Manual entry* mode, both fields become editable again.

### 3.3 Automatic recalculation

When the mode is *Calculated from components*, the kit’s sale price **and** purchase price are recalculated automatically in the following cases:

- Adding or removing a component.
- Changing a component quantity.
- Changing a component’s unit price or purchase price.

## 4. Business rules

1. **A kit cannot be a generic product.** These two concepts are mutually exclusive. If you try to check *Generic product* on a kit, Kafinea blocks the save with the message:

   > *A generic product cannot be a kit.*
2. **A kit cannot be a specific product** (attached to a generic). The message displayed is:

   > *A specific product cannot be a kit.*
3. **A generic product cannot be added as a component of a kit.** The message displayed is:

   > *A generic product cannot be added as a component of a kit.*
4. **A specific product cannot be added as a component of a kit.** The message displayed is:

   > *A specific product (child of a generic) cannot be added as a component of a kit.*

> **Note:** These rules ensure catalog consistency. Kits group "standard" products (neither generic nor specific). To manage supplier sourcing, use [generic products](https://www.kafinea.com/en/documentation/catalog/generic-products/).

---

## 5. Frequently asked questions

**Why can I not check "Generic product" on my kit?**
Because a kit groups concrete components with defined prices, whereas a generic product is an abstract model whose price is calculated from child specifics. The two price calculation mechanisms are incompatible.

**Why are the unit price and purchase price of my kit read-only?**
Because the calculation mode is *Calculated from components*. Both values are the sum of the corresponding values of its components. To enter them manually, switch the mode to *Manual entry*.

**My kit price does not update after I modify a component—why?**
Check that the calculation mode is *Calculated from components* and not *Manual entry*. In manual mode, neither the sale price nor the purchase price is recalculated automatically.

**Can I nest kits (a kit within a kit)?**
Yes, a component of a kit can itself be a kit. However, automatic recalculation does not cascade: if you modify a component of the sub-kit, the sub-kit price will be recalculated (if it is in *Calculated from components* mode), but the parent kit will not be recalculated automatically. You will need to manually modify the parent kit (for example, by removing and then re-adding the sub-kit) to trigger its recalculation.
