Each period defines a timeframe (generally 12 months) during which accounting entries are recorded. It is accessible via <em><strong>Finance &gt; Accounting periods<\/strong><\/em>.  <\/p>\n<p>The accounting period is a fundamental element of accounting: it determines the period over which financial statements are prepared and governs the generation of accounting entries.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>1. Create an accounting period<\/h2>\n<p>Click <em><strong>Add a period<\/strong><\/em> from the module list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Information to provide:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Name<\/strong>: the label of the period (e.g., &#8220;Period 2025&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start date<\/strong>: the first day of the period<\/li>\n<li><strong>End date<\/strong>: the last day of the period<\/li>\n<li><strong>Status<\/strong>: the period\u2019s status (active or closed)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exchange rate for accounting<\/strong>: the type of exchange rate used for entries in foreign currency<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exchange rate for inventory valuation<\/strong>: the rate used to value inventory at the end of the period<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"bq-important\">\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong> Only one accounting period can be active at a time. Make sure to close the previous period before activating the next one. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr>\n<h2>2. Period lifecycle<\/h2>\n<div style=\"overflow-x:auto\">\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Status<\/th>\n<th>Description<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Active<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>The current period. Accounting entries are recorded in this period<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Closed<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>The period is finished. No new entries can be added to it<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"bq-important\">\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong> If you record a document whose date corresponds to a closed or non-existent period, Kafinea warns you that no accounting entries will be generated. You can choose to continue or cancel the recording. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr>\n<h2>3. Cash accounting<\/h2>\n<p>Each period has a <em><strong>Cash accounting<\/strong><\/em> option that lets you switch between two accounting modes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Accrual accounting<\/strong> (default): entries are recorded on the date of the triggering event (issuance of the invoice)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cash accounting<\/strong>: entries are recorded on the date of actual receipt or payment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more details, see the page <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kafinea.com\/fr\/documentation\/exercices-comptables\/la-comptabilite-de-tresorerie\/\">Cash accounting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>4. Frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Does my accounting period have to match the calendar year?<\/strong><br \/>\nNo, a period can start and end on any date. Some companies have offset periods (e.g., from April 1 to March 31). The standard duration is 12 months, but the first period may be shorter or longer.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>What happens if I forget to create a period?<\/strong><br \/>\nDocuments will be recorded normally, but no accounting entries will be generated for dates not covered by an active period. Kafinea displays a warning in this case. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Can I reopen a closed period?<\/strong><br \/>\nTechnically, the status can be changed.
