Identifying a generic or specific product<\/h2>\n<p>On the product record, check <strong>Generic product<\/strong> in the <em>Generic products<\/em> block.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>blue &#8220;Generic&#8221; badge<\/strong> appears next to the product name on the detail record to immediately identify generic products.<\/li>\n<li>Specific products do not display a badge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<h2>2. <em>Generic products<\/em> block on the record<\/h2>\n<p>The block contains fields related to generic\/specific management. Price calculation modes<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>calculation mode<\/strong> determines how Kafinea populates the selling price of the generic product. <strong>You must choose an explicit mode<\/strong>: no default value is applied silently. Display and behavior on the generic product record<\/h2>\n<p>For generic products, several visual elements help you understand how the price is obtained and whether you can modify it.<\/p>\n<h3>4.1 Contextual banner in the <em>Pricing information<\/em> block<\/h3>\n<p>An information banner appears at the top of the pricing block:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In <em>Manual entry<\/em> mode: &#8220;Manual entry: the price is not recalculated automatically.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>In other modes: &#8220;The selling price is recalculated automatically from child specific products (mode: %s).&#8221; followed by the date of the <strong>last calculation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The banner also contains a <strong>&#8220;View children&#8221;<\/strong> link to quickly access the linked specific products. The price is recalculated automatically when an offer or specific changes; to force it, use the <strong>&#8220;Recalculate&#8221;<\/strong> button in the margin analysis widget (offered when the price is flagged as <strong>frozen<\/strong>) or the bulk action <strong>&#8220;Recalculate catalog price&#8221;<\/strong> from the product list. <\/p>\n<h3>4.2 <em>Unit price<\/em> field in read-only mode + &#8220;Calculated&#8221; badge<\/h3>\n<p>When the generic is <strong>not<\/strong> in <em>Manual entry<\/em> mode, the <strong>Unit price<\/strong> field is presented as <strong>read-only<\/strong> and accompanied by a <strong>&#8220;Calculated&#8221;<\/strong> badge. A tooltip specifies: <em>&#8220;This price is calculated automatically (mode: %s). Switch to Manual entry (no recalculation) mode to enter it.&#8221;<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>In <em>Manual entry<\/em> mode, the field becomes editable again: you can freely enter the selling price, which will never be overwritten by an automatic recalculation.<\/p>\n<h3>4.3 &#8220;How is this price calculated?&#8221; popover<\/h3>\n<p>Next to the <em>Unit price<\/em> field, an <strong>\u24d8<\/strong> icon opens a popover that details:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The active calculation <strong>mode<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The selected <strong>reference cost<\/strong>, the applied <strong>margin<\/strong>, and the <strong>rounding<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The list of <strong>sources used<\/strong>: depending on the mode, child specific products (with their purchase price) or supplier offers (with supplier and price).<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>final price<\/strong> obtained.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If no calculation data is available, the popover displays <em>&#8220;No calculation data available.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>5. Business rules<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p><strong>A generic product cannot have a parent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you check <em>Generic product<\/em> and a parent is specified, Kafinea blocks the save with the message:<br \/>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>A generic product cannot have a parent product.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>This rule applies to <strong>all<\/strong> channels: UI editing, quick edit, bulk edit, REST API, workflows, CSV import.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>The parent of a specific product must itself be a generic product.<\/strong> Kafinea automatically verifies this consistency upon saving.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Automatic price recalculation<\/strong>: when a specific product changes parent, when a supplier offer is created\/modified\/deleted, or when the purchase price of a specific changes, the price of the related generic product is recalculated automatically\u2014<strong>unless<\/strong> the generic is in <em>Manual entry<\/em> mode (in which case, the price remains strictly the one you entered).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Explicit mode choice<\/strong>: the system no longer applies a silent default mode. A generic without a calculation mode will produce an <em>Error: calculation mode not defined<\/em> status and its price will not be modified, until you select a mode. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>A generic product cannot be a kit<\/strong> (and vice versa). The two price calculation mechanisms are incompatible. If you attempt to transform a kit into a generic product (or add sub-products to a generic), Kafinea blocks the operation. See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kafinea.com\/en\/documentation\/catalog\/product-kits\/\">Product kits<\/a> for more details.   <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr>\n<h2>6. Switching between generic \u2194 specific<\/h2>\n<p>You can change a product from generic to specific (and vice versa) at any time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Non-applicable values are <strong>retained in the database<\/strong> but simply grayed out on screen.<\/li>\n<li>If you switch back, the data becomes visible and editable again.<\/li>\n<li>Therefore, you do not lose any information when changing type.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<h2>7. Frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Why can&#8217;t I enter a parent on my generic product?<\/strong><br \/>\nBecause a generic is by definition a &#8220;template&#8221; without direct supplier linkage. Only specific products have a generic parent. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is the unit price of my generic product read-only?<\/strong><br \/>\nBecause the active calculation mode automatically recalculates this price from child specifics or their supplier offers. To enter it manually, switch the calculation mode to <em>Manual entry (no recalculation)<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the difference between <em>Cheapest offer<\/em> and <em>Cheapest specific<\/em>?<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Cheapest offer<\/em> (and its variants <em>Preferred offer<\/em> \/ <em>Average of offers<\/em>) relies on <strong>supplier offers<\/strong> linked to child specifics. <em>Cheapest specific<\/em> (and <em>Average of specifics<\/em>) directly uses the <strong>purchase price<\/strong> carried by specific products, without going through offers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why are the price calculation fields grayed out on my specific product?<\/strong><br \/>\nThese fields are only used for automatic price calculation of the generic. They have no meaning on a specific product, which reflects a precise supplier offer. <\/p>\n<p><strong>The status displays <em>Error: calculation mode not defined<\/em>. What should I do?<\/strong><br \/>\nOpen the generic product record and select a mode in <em>Price calculation mode<\/em>, then save.
