Introduction #
Storage locations represent the physical or logical subdivisions within a site: aisles, zones, shelves, or even virtual locations for accounting purposes. They can be accessed via Inventory Management > Storage Locations or from the Storage Locations tab of a site.
Every inventory movement in Kafinea takes place between two locations, enabling full traceability of goods flows.
1. Create a storage location #
Click on Add a location from the list or from a site’s dedicated tab.
Information to provide:
- Name: The name of the location (required)
- Internal code: a short code for quickly identifying the location
- Site: the site to which the location is associated (required)
- Location type: determines the nature of the location and its role in inventory flows
- Virtual storage: indicates whether the location is physical or virtual (used for accounting purposes)
2. Types of sites #
The type of location determines the role of each location in the supply chain:
| Type | Usage |
|---|---|
| Internal | Traditional on-site storage facility |
| Suppliers | A virtual location representing a supplier's inventory (prior to receipt) |
| Customers | A virtual location representing inventory shipped to a customer |
| Reserved | Stock reserved for a specific order or use |
| In transit | Goods currently being transferred between two locations |
| Production | Work-in-progress inventory |
| Inventory adjustments | Technical field for inventory adjustments |
| Disposal | Items removed from active inventory (defective, expired) |
| Destroyed | Items permanently destroyed |
Good to know: Locations such as "Suppliers," "Customers," "Adjustments," and "Scrap" are generally virtual locations. They are used to track the origin and destination of inventory movements without corresponding to an actual physical location.
3. Related items #
From record storage location record , you can view:
- Inventory movements: the history of all incoming and outgoing movements for this location
- Products in stock: the products currently located in this area, along with their quantities
4. Frequently Asked Questions #
How many locations should I create?
It depends on the level of detail you want to track. At a minimum, create one internal location per warehouse. If you need to track movements in greater detail (by aisle, by zone), create additional locations.
What are virtual locations used for?
They enable the modeling of complete inventory flows. For example, a receiving transaction creates a transfer from the “Suppliers” location to an “Internal” location, ensuring end-to-end traceability.
Can I move a storage location from one site to another?
You can change the site associated with a storage location. However, if any inventory movements have already been recorded for that storage location, it is best to create a new storage location at the new site and perform a transfer movement.
